It is the goal of climate protection to reduce the output of greenhouse gases like CO2 and thus to limit the impact of the anthropogenic greenhouse effect. Starting point for all climate protection activities is the performance of an inventory, regarding the amount of CO2 emissions, a company, product or a service causes (carbon footprint). These should, in the long-term, be reduced or avoided by the use of concepts like behaviour modification/sensitisation of employees or energy efficient solutions. Unavoidable emissions can be balanced out by investing into recognised climate protection projects.
Advantages of a climate protection strategy
A climate protection strategy strengthens the repositioning or supplementing of the existing commitment in the area of sustainability and allows a possible development of growth opportunities, a higher customer retention as well as a new marketing instrument.
Expand your commitment towards climate protection together with InfraCert and ClimatePartner. With the ClimatePartner process you can balance out the unavoidable CO2 emissions, that arise in the different levels of service production in the hotel. For this purpose we recommend one of the international recognised climate protection projects, that fit your sustainability strategy and are therefore easily implemented in your hotel’s communication strategy.
Three steps to becoming a climate neutral hotel
1. Calculation of the carbon footprint
For the creation of the carbon footprint of a hotel all relevant greenhouse gas emissions of the value chain are being calculated and identified. This CO2 foot print is systematically being established with the help of all emission indicators like e.g. energy consumption, textile cleaning and consumables.
2. Reduction and avoidance
With the help of the calculated carbon footprint of a hotel we are able to identify the biggest emission generators (usually energy and water, fabrics cleaning) and define fields of action to reduce and avoid CO2 emissions.
3. CO2 balance
All unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions are eventually being balanced out by the support of climate protection projects. These projects demonstrably save CO2 emissions, are regularly being proved by independent organisations like e.g. the TÜV or PricewaterhouseCoopers and are certified with international recognised standards like e.g. the Gold Standard of the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF).
A climate neutral hotel has at its disposal a certificate and a logo as a communication instrument as well as a tracking code for the climate protection project. This way climate protection offers an essential distinguishing feature for hotels and tourism.
Climate protection projects
Climate protection projects save greenhouse gas emissions or avoid additional, e.g. by constructing wind turbines, which might result in the shutdown of a coal plant. Internationally recognised standards prove these savings and provide transparency. There are climate protection projects of every aspect like e.g. hydropower plants, biomass power plants, reafforestation and forest protection projects.
